St. Chad's Church

St. Chad's Church
The West facing C15th porch of St. Chads

Located in the small, sleepy village of Prees in north Shropshire, St. Chad's is a rather forlorn looking yet historic Anglican church in need of much repair and restoration. But never-the-less it has an important and long history dating from the C11th, with its first (unnamed) incumbents recorded in 1086. Only twenty years following the Norman conquest of Briton in 1066 by the army of William the Conquerer, the French king of Normandy.

The list of Incumbents since 1086

The church was originally founded by Saint Chad of Mercia, a prominent C7th Anglo-Saxon churchman who became the Abbott of several monastries, the Bishop of Northumbrians in 669, and later Bishop of the Mercians. He featured strongly in supporting the work of Bede the Venerable and is credited with spreading the Christian Gospel throughout middle England. Later the same year he was given land at Lichfield by the then King Wulfhere on which he built a monastry, later to become the site of Lichfield Cathedral.

St Bede records that Chad was venerated as a Saint immediately following his death on 2nd March 672 - a date still rembembered and celebrated to this day as being his Feast Day.

The famous and beautiful stained glass windows are a sight to behold, some of which date from the middle of C14th, and in the Sandford Chapel, which commemorates Richard Sandford who died in the battle of Shrewsbury (Battlefield) in 1403, is a later created replacement panel of him as a kneeling knight, installed in 1873.

Prees - St Chad’s Church
The historic and beautiful Church of St Chad’s is largely 14th-century but is built on a Saxon site; it has an 18th-century tower and contains a notable window made up of fragments of medieval glass brought to Prees from the site of the Battle of Shrewsbury, 1403. The church is Grade 2* listed. St Chad’s is part of the PEW group of churches in North Shropshire - working together with St Chad’s Prees and St Mary the Virgin Edstaston. We are delighted to say that our new Vicar, Revd Mark Amey, will be in post from 17 February. ................... The parish of St Chad’s Church covers the villages of Prees, Higher Heath and Prees Green as well as some surrounding farms and cottages. There are 35 on the electoral roll. There is an enthusiastic team of bell ringers, who ring most Sundays and for weddings, and worship is enriched by a wonderful organ, which is kept in good repair. Services vary from week to week, in a regular pattern, offering opportunities for varied worshiping styles. In normal times services are followed by tea, coffee and biscuits, giving the congregation time to meet and get to know one another. These times have proved invaluable in achieving a sense of oneness in the congregation and an opportunity to welcome visitors in a relaxed way. Social activities are organised throughout the year, not just to raise money but to allow the community to meet together and usually eat together! Prees congregation members also offer a Self Support in Bereavement Group which meet monthly for outings and company, and St Chad’s Ladies also meet monthly for friendship and outings. The PCC has a 100 Club to raise money for the upkeep of the churchyard and Church building, which is appreciated as an asset in the whole community. The response has been encouraging and assures us that people appreciate and support ‘their’ church, even though they may not be regular worshippers.
